The Legend of the Christmas Flamingo

A Story by Keith Walker Bradley

Our Flamingo Flaura

The origin of The Legend of the Christmas Flamingo is not shrouded in mystery. It came to be as an accompaniment to a bevy of flamingo kitsch that was being lobbed at a friendly Flamingo Warrior during the Christmas season. Where the idea came from is obscure, but it seemed to work and now, three decades later it is seeing the light of day. There is something about “pink” that engenders repressed emotions. Add a flamingo to the mix and suddenly there is “life!” Read about Flaura and get to know her – her enchanting allure; her resourcefulness, her adventuresome nature as well as her perseverance when it comes time to “deliver the stash!” Make “The Legend” part of your annual Christmas celebration as Flaura and her story enhance a centuries-old drama.

Keith Walker Bradley

Keith Walker Bradley had little or no contact with Flamingoes growing up in Springfield, MA and even less while at Haverford College. During his time in Manhattan, flamingoes were rarely around until the ‘80s when the wars broke out, i.e. the Flamingo Wars -- not exactly Punic Wars but there were occasional Pyrrhic Victories. Since then, flamingo kitsch has taken front and center when special ammunition is required to amp up friendly correspondence between Warriors. Flamingoes rule, whether as key chains, scrub brushes, scarves, towels and anything else that looks good in pink! Occasionally, Flamingoes are immortalized in a little story of Christmas.

A new book is available for children and families.
'The Legend of the Christmas Flamingo' is beautifully written and illustrated. Written by a friend of mine, it sits on my counter for all to see.
Friends and family have all read it and loved it. Probably not perfect for very young kids, though they will love the drawings.
Give yourself a treat and read this book!!

“It was charming, silly, stylish – all kinds of good adjectives come to mind. Such a pleasure to read. It sounded as if it were written with martini and cigarette in hand. And the illustrations couldn’t be more sophisticated and quirky. A children’s book for grown-ups. A Christmas book that isn’t even vaguely Christmassy!”
